The physical cabling of a network is often overlooked or taken for granted. All too often if communication links are established the cabling is assumed to be good. This could be a very costly assumption. Oftentimes, the newly established network connection may be functional but just marginally. The first time there is any fluctuation the link could be disrupted resulting in costly downtime and troubleshooting.

All cabling should not just be “tested” it should be verified and certified. These may sound like the same processes, but they are very much different and could be the difference in a reliable network connection and an unstable faulty connection. There are several types of testing that can be performed. The following is a brief overview of each type.

Continuity – This is the testing that was done for years. A quick check that the wiremap of the cable was correct. This simply ensures that each conductor in the cable is continuous from one end to the other. This in no way ensures that the cable will perform as expected.

Certify – Certification testing compares the electrical performance of the cabling to that of the applicable standard. For example a Cat6 network cable is certified to meet the standard of the TIA/EIA-568-B.2-1 for Cat6. This ensures that the cable type installed performs electrically as expected. Many times a cable that is improperly installed (kinked, stretched, mis-terminated, etc) will fail this test while they would pass the continuity test.

Verify- Verification ensures the network performance of components connected to a cable. For example, a verifier can be connected to one end of a cable while the other end is connected to a network switch. If the cable is to be tested for 100Mb/s the verifier will ensure that the connection is able to transmit and receive at the indicated speed. Verification in conjunction with certification will ensure the most robust network possible.
